In 1952, with the ascension of Elizabeth II to the throne, the first gold Sovereigns were minted featuring her portrait on the obverse. The first profile of the Queen was created by the British sculptor Mary Gillick, who depicted her with a laurel wreath instead of the classic regal crown. This particular version of the Sovereign is known as the "bow" or "bowknot."
The gold Sovereign, also known as the "Sovereign" (from its original name "Sovereign"), was introduced in 1489 under Henry VII. Subsequently, in 1817, during the reign of George III, the coin took on its current form, characterized on the reverse by the famous engraving of Saint George slaying the dragon, a work by the Italian Benedetto Pistrucci. Since then, this coin has been minted annually by the Royal Mint, the English royal mint.
Today, the gold Sovereign is one of the most traded investment coins in the world. Thanks to its widespread distribution and ease of resale internationally, it is highly valued by both investors and collectors.
