The George V Gold Sovereign is also known as the "Great War Sovereign", as it is the only coin to have been minted in the six branches of the British Imperial Mint, at a time when the Empire was at its peak. This coin celebrates the glorious days of Great Britain under the reign of one of its most popular monarchs.
The obverse depicts King George V with his characteristic short beard, in a portrait created by the Australian artist Sir Edgar Bertram Mackennal. The reverse features the classic design of Saint George on horseback slaying the dragon, a masterpiece engraved by the Italian Benedetto Pistrucci.
The Gold Sovereign, also known as a Sovereign, was first issued in 1489 under Henry VII. In 1817, during the reign of George III, it took on its current form with the introduction of Pistrucci's famous reverse. Even today, this iconic coin is minted annually by the Royal Mint, the British royal mint.
