The Gold Sovereign featuring the "young crowned" portrait of Elizabeth II bears the Queen's second effigy on the obverse, created by English sculptor Arnold Machin. The design was selected in 1962 and slightly modified in 1968, but the first minting only occurred in 1974, a full 21 years after Elizabeth II ascended to the throne. In the portrait, the Sovereign is depicted almost in profile, with an expression that Machin intended to be solemn and majestic, devoid of sentimentality.

The Gold Sovereign, also known as the "Sovereign" (from its original name Sovereign), was introduced in 1489 under Henry VII. In 1817, during the reign of George III, it took on its current form, characterized on the reverse by the famous engraving of Saint George slaying the dragon, a work by the Italian artist Benedetto Pistrucci.

Today, the Gold Sovereign is one of the most widespread and traded investment coins in the world. Its widespread availability makes it a popular choice among both investors and collectors, ensuring its easy resale anywhere in the world.
