  • Why Have Your CITES-Listed Items Appraised

    Dec 12, 2024
Currently, legislation prohibits the sale and trade of any artifact listed in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), which contains protected naturalistic elements (ivory, shells, corals, etc.), with the exception of antique ivory, which, however, must be accompanied by specific certifications. More precisely, artifacts from before 1947 that contain, even if only in a minimal part, natural materials already included in the Washington Convention and/or naturalistic and taxidermic specimens must be accompanied by an antique appraisal certifying their dating, just like those from after 1947, and raw ivory, must be accompanied by a CITES certificate (issued, in Italy, by the offices of the State Forestry Corps).Borsa in vera pelle di coccodrillo-Vintage anni '70, autentico Made in Italy | eBay
Consequently, only items processed and acquired before 1947, according to EC Regulation 338/97, can be freely traded.
For those who come into possession of goods with these characteristics through hereditary successions or already own them, we proceed by drawing up an appraisal that will then be presented to the competent Authorities, in order to regularize the owner's position.
In Italy, the import and trade of such objects is punished, in the absence of the prescribed CITES certification, with an administrative sanction and the concrete risk of incurring criminal proceedings.

    Legal Compliance

CITES regulations govern the international trade of protected species and derived products, in order to preserve biodiversity. Possessing or trading uncertified items could lead to serious legal consequences, including the seizure of goods and heavy fines. An official appraisal ensures that items comply with the law, offering peace of mind and protection to owners.

    Object Valuation

A CITES appraisal is not only a matter of legality, but also a way to enhance the value of objects. Documenting the origin and value of an artifact increases its appeal on the market, especially for collectors and international buyers.

This aspect is crucial when you want to sell or insure an asset, as certification increases its credibility and economic value.

    Ethical Responsibility

In addition to legal and economic aspects, having a CITES item appraised demonstrates a commitment to sustainability and environmental conservation. These objects often tell stories of past eras, but their trade must respect the species and ecosystems from which they come. Adequate certification helps reduce the black market and protect endangered species.

    Appraisal Procedure

The appraisal process involves a careful examination of the object by our specialized appraisal team, who determine its authenticity, origin, and compliance with CITES regulations. This official documentation is necessary for both the sale and export of objects, ensuring a transparent and secure transaction.

    Importance for Collectors

For collectors, owning a certified item represents added value. A CITES certified asset not only attests to its authenticity, but also adds a level of prestige to the collection. Documentation becomes tangible proof of the object's history and rarity, making it a safer investment.

Having CITES category objects appraised is not only a matter of legal compliance but a gesture of responsibility towards natural and cultural heritage. Whether for collectors, sellers, or enthusiasts, this practice ensures that the value of objects is respected and preserved over time, while contributing to the protection of endangered species and the fight against illegal trafficking. Relying on qualified experts is the first step to ensuring conscious and respectful management of these precious assets.
